Most people in India know BEL for one thing — the voting machine. You press a button, a light blinks, and somewhere on that little grey box the letters "BEL" are printed. That's usually the extent of it.
Which is a bit unfair, honestly. The voting machine is nowhere near the most interesting thing this company makes.
Where It All Started
Rewind to 1954. India had been independent for seven years, and the armed forces had a problem nobody was talking about much: almost every piece of specialised electronic gear they used came from somewhere else. Radios, signalling equipment, components — all imported. In peacetime that's expensive. In wartime it's dangerous.
So the government set up Bharat Electronics in Bengaluru under the Ministry of Defence, with a fairly narrow brief — build the electronic equipment the defence services need, here, in India.
Seven decades on, that narrow brief has turned into a Navratna PSU with nine factories, a couple of research units, and something like 29 strategic business units running under it. The government still holds a majority stake, a little over 51 percent.
The Business, In Plain Terms
BEL designs and manufactures electronic systems. The bulk of them go to defence. Some go to civilian departments. That's the whole business, and it's a lot bigger than that sentence makes it sound.
Consider this: BEL holds roughly 60 percent of India's defence electronics market. When the Army, Navy, or Air Force needs radar, communication gear, or electronic warfare equipment, the odds are heavily in favour of that order landing at BEL.
The customer list runs well past the three services, though. Paramilitary forces buy from BEL. So does Police Wireless. So do the Department of Space, the Department of Telecommunications, the Meteorological Department, and the Airports Authority of India.
And the company has been steadily pushing into territory that has nothing to do with the military — civil aviation systems, anti-drone technology, satellite assembly and integration, solar power, railway and metro solutions, cyber security, EV energy storage, smart city infrastructure, medical electronics, and AI applications.
What BEL Actually Manufactures
On the defence side
- Radars and fire control systems — the largest and most visible product line
- Missile system electronics — sub-systems and components rather than the missiles themselves
- Military communication and C4I systems — encrypted networks that let commanders talk to units in the field
- Electronic warfare and avionics — jamming equipment, aircraft electronics
- Naval systems and sonar — including anti-submarine warfare suites
- Electro optics — night vision devices, thermal imagers
- Tank electronics and weapon system upgrades — modernising older platforms rather than replacing them
- Simulators, shelters, masts, batteries, fuzes
On the civilian side
- Electronic Voting Machines and VVPAT units
- E-governance and homeland security systems
- Civilian radars, telecom and broadcast equipment
- Integrated traffic management and real-time train information systems
- Solar photovoltaic systems
- Cyber security hardware — data diodes, secure storage
- EV charging stations and metro platform screen doors
- Semiconductor devices, microwave tubes, crystal devices and assorted electronic components
So How Does the Money Come In?
This is where BEL differs from a normal listed company, and it's worth understanding properly.
Long-cycle defence contracts
The overwhelming majority of revenue comes from big-ticket orders placed by the Ministry of Defence and the services. These aren't quarterly transactions — a single contract can run into thousands of crores and take years to execute.
The practical effect is an order book that stretches years into the future. Analysts pay far more attention to BEL's order book than to any single quarter's numbers, because that's what actually tells you where revenue is headed.
Turnkey delivery, not just parts
BEL rarely just ships hardware. It designs the system, installs it, integrates it with whatever else is already deployed, and hands over something that works. Full-system delivery carries better margins than component supply, and it's harder for competitors to replicate.
The long tail: spares and servicing
Here's the underappreciated part. A radar installed today will need servicing, spares, and mid-life upgrades for the next fifteen or twenty years — and that work stays with BEL. It's slow, unglamorous, recurring revenue, and it's considerably more reliable than winning fresh orders.
Exports
BEL sells to the United States, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mauritius, Seychelles, and a growing list of others. To chase new markets, the company has opened marketing offices in Oman, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, and expanded its long-standing Singapore and New York offices.
Contract manufacturing
There's also a side business most people miss — BEL does electronic manufacturing services for other firms. PCB assembly and testing, precision fabrication, cable assemblies, antenna manufacturing, microwave integrated circuits. It's a sensible use of factory capacity that would otherwise sit idle between defence production runs.
The Numbers
For FY 2025, BEL posted revenue of roughly ₹24,511 crore and net profit of about ₹5,322 crore. Total assets came to around ₹40,418 crore. Headcount stood at 8,844 as of March 2025 — which, for a company of that size, is a fairly lean operation.
The stock trades on both the BSE and NSE and sits in the Nifty 50 as well as the Sensex.
Why R&D Matters More Here Than Elsewhere
Defence electronics ages fast. A radar that was cutting-edge in 2015 may be close to obsolete now, because the countermeasures moved on. That means a company in this business either invests continuously in R&D or slowly becomes irrelevant.
BEL put 6.24 percent of its turnover into R&D in FY 2023-24. It also plays a role that doesn't show up cleanly on a balance sheet — taking technology developed by DRDO in the lab and figuring out how to manufacture it at scale. That handoff is where a lot of indigenous defence projects have historically stalled, and BEL is the company that bridges it.
The Bottom Line
BEL is one of those companies whose importance is inversely proportional to how much anyone talks about it. It doesn't advertise. Its products rarely make headlines. But it sits at the centre of India's defence electronics ecosystem, and its seventy-year run from import-substitution workshop to Navratna PSU is about as literal an illustration of "Atmanirbhar Bharat" as you'll find.
Steady order flow, expanding exports, and a deliberate push into civilian markets — the setup looks reasonably solid from here.
